Finjuve & topical finasteride — your questions answered
Evidence-based answers to the questions patients ask most often. For prescriber-level detail see the Healthcare Professionals page; for the supporting studies see Research & Evidence.
What is Finjuve?
Finjuve is a brand name for a topical finasteride cutaneous spray studied in the management of male androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss). It contains the same active drug as oral finasteride 1 mg tablets but is applied directly to the scalp rather than swallowed. It is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, Ireland and most other regulated markets.
How does topical finasteride work?
Finasteride is a competitive inhibitor of type II 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp. DHT drives the miniaturisation of hair follicles in men with a genetic susceptibility. By reducing local DHT, topical finasteride aims to allow affected follicles to recover and to slow further loss.
Is Finjuve prescription only?
Yes. Topical finasteride — including Finjuve — is a prescription-only medicine in the United Kingdom, Ireland and most other regulated jurisdictions. It must be initiated by a registered prescriber such as a GP, dermatologist or independent prescribing pharmacist. Self-sourcing finasteride from unregulated channels is strongly discouraged.
How is topical finasteride different from oral finasteride?
Both forms contain the same active drug. Oral finasteride 1 mg is taken systemically and reduces DHT throughout the body. Topical finasteride is applied to the scalp and acts predominantly at the site of application, producing a smaller reduction in systemic DHT. A 2022 phase III trial (Piraccini et al., JEADV) reported non-inferior hair-count outcomes for the 0.25% topical spray compared with oral 1 mg over 24 weeks.
The choice between routes is a clinical decision that depends on prior treatment history, tolerability and patient preference.
What are the potential side effects of Finjuve?
Topical finasteride carries the same class warnings as the oral product. Reported effects include reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorders, mood changes including depression, and (rarely) suicidal thoughts. Local skin reactions specific to topical use are also possible. Systemic side effects are generally less frequent than with oral therapy because of the lower plasma exposure, but they remain possible. Any concerning symptom — particularly persistent mood or sexual changes — should be reviewed promptly with your prescriber.
The UK MHRA and the European Medicines Agency have asked prescribers to highlight these potential effects when counselling patients.
How long does it take to see results from Finjuve?
Hair-loss treatments do not work overnight. Clinical studies typically assess outcomes at 3, 6 and 12 months of consistent daily use. Most users will see slowed loss before regrowth; meaningful changes in visible density are often only apparent from 6 to 12 months. If treatment is stopped, hair lost to androgenetic alopecia typically resumes its previous trajectory within 9 to 12 months, so therapy is continued only as long as the benefit is judged to outweigh the risks.
Can women use Finjuve?
Topical finasteride is not appropriate for women of childbearing potential because of the risk of harm to a male fetus. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not use it or come into contact with it.
Some research has explored topical finasteride in post-menopausal women with female pattern hair loss, but routine clinical use in women is restricted and should only be considered under specialist supervision.
What handling precautions apply at home?
Apply to a dry, undamaged scalp at the directed time of day. Wash your hands after use. Avoid contact with skin or hair of women who are or may become pregnant and with children. Allow the spray to dry before close contact, sleep or shared surfaces. Specific handling instructions for the dispensed product should be followed as supplied by your prescriber or pharmacy.
Where can I get Finjuve in the UK or Ireland?
Finjuve and topical finasteride formulations are dispensed by regulated online clinics, pharmacies and telehealth providers following an appropriate prescriber consultation. In the UK, MHRA-regulated providers include Sons, partnered with The Independent Pharmacy. In Ireland, Sons operates with the PSNI-registered Chemist Connect pharmacy. The full directory is available on the Stockists page.
Does Finjuve work for crown thinning, hairline recession or both?
Pivotal trials have measured outcomes primarily at the vertex (crown) and have shown clear benefits there. Improvements at the temples and hairline are typically more modest because miniaturisation in those regions is often more advanced by the time patients present. A prescriber will assess the pattern and stage of loss before recommending therapy.
Can I combine Finjuve with minoxidil?
Combination therapy with finasteride and minoxidil is supported by randomised trials showing greater improvement than either monotherapy. The combination is commonly prescribed in UK and Irish hair-loss clinics. The specific regimen — including whether finasteride and minoxidil are applied separately or as a single combination spray — should be agreed with your prescriber.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
Apply the next scheduled dose at the usual time. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the missed one. If you have missed several days, contact your prescriber for advice; consistent daily use is what produces benefit.
What is this website?
It is a reference page about Finjuve and a directory of providers that dispense topical finasteride. It is not a clinic, pharmacy or e-commerce platform; it does not prescribe or supply medicines. Stockists listed in the directory are checked for regulatory standing in their jurisdiction. Listing is not an endorsement of one provider over another.
